If you visit Porto, chances are you’ll spend some time sampling the city’s world-famous Port wine. While a traditional tasting is a must, there’s another local favourite that deserves a spot on your itinerary: the Porto Tonico.
This refreshing port cocktail combines white Port with tonic water, citrus, and plenty of ice to create one of Portugal’s most popular summer drinks. Crisp, slightly sweet, and surprisingly easy to drink, it’s the perfect aperitif before dinner or a welcome refreshment after exploring Porto’s steep streets.
I quickly discovered that ordering a Porto Tonico is about more than enjoying a cocktail. It’s part of the local lifestyle. Whether overlooking the Douro River, relaxing in a neighbourhood wine bar, or taking a break while shopping at Mercado do Bolhão, this simple drink seemed to appear everywhere.
If you’re planning your own visit, I highly recommend staying in the historic centre where many of Porto’s best wine bars and attractions are within walking distance. During my trip I stayed at Canto de Luz, one of my favourite boutique hotels in Europe.
After returning home, I couldn’t stop thinking about Porto Tonicos. I ended up recreating a Porto-themed evening complete with homemade bifanas, Super Bock, and, of course, several Porto Tonicos. It instantly brought me back to Portugal.
If you’re planning a trip, here’s everything you need to know about Porto’s signature port cocktail, including where to try one, how to make an authentic Porto Tonico recipe at home, and why it deserves a place on every Porto itinerary. What Is a Porto Tonico?
A Porto Tonico is exactly what its name suggests: Port wine mixed with tonic water.
Unlike the rich ruby Ports many visitors associate with Portugal, a Porto Tonico uses white Port, giving the drink a lighter, drier, and far more refreshing profile. Served over ice with a slice of lemon or orange, it’s become one of the country’s favourite warm-weather drinks.

Although Port wine has been produced in Portugal’s Douro Valley for centuries, the Porto Tonico is a much more modern creation. It gained popularity as bartenders and wine producers searched for new ways to introduce younger drinkers to Port. Today, you’ll find it on menus throughout Porto, from trendy cocktail lounges to casual cafés and riverside terraces. Many Port wine cellar tours in Porto now include a Porto Tonico as part of the tasting experience.
The result is a drink that’s sophisticated without being pretentious. It has enough sweetness to showcase the character of the Port while remaining crisp and refreshing thanks to the tonic.
If you’re only planning on doing a Port tasting during your visit, you’re missing out. Many locals are just as likely to order a Porto Tonico before dinner as they are a glass of Port after dessert.
Why the Porto Tonico Is Portugal’s Favourite Port Cocktail
There’s a reason the Porto Tonico has become one of Portugal’s most recognizable drinks.
Unlike heavier cocktails, it’s incredibly refreshing, making it ideal during Porto’s hot summer afternoons. The tonic balances the sweetness of the white Port while citrus adds brightness that keeps every sip crisp.
It’s also relatively low in alcohol compared to many classic cocktails, making it an easy drink to enjoy over a long lunch or before an evening meal.
Perhaps most importantly, it showcases one of Portugal’s most famous exports in an approachable way. Even if you’ve never been a fan of traditional Port, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy a Porto Tonico.
After trying one, I understood why it had become such a local favourite. It quickly became my go-to drink whenever I needed a break from sightseeing before heading off in search of another great meal or a cold Super Bock.
Where to Try a Porto Tonico in Porto

Prova Wine Bar
Just a short walk from São Bento Station, Prova Wine Bar is one of Porto’s highest-rated wine bars and an excellent place to try a Porto Tonico made with premium white Port.
The knowledgeable staff can explain the differences between various white Ports and often recommend bottles you’ve likely never encountered outside Portugal. If you discover one you love, it’s also a great place to purchase a bottle to recreate your own Porto Tonico recipe at home.
Aduela
If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, Aduela has become a favourite among locals.
Its outdoor terrace fills up in the evenings with people enjoying drinks before dinner, creating exactly the kind of laid-back atmosphere that makes Porto so enjoyable. Order a Porto Tonico, find a table outside, and simply watch the city go by.
Ribeira Waterfront
Yes, it’s touristy.
Yes, it’s absolutely worth doing.
The bars lining the Ribeira waterfront offer beautiful views across the Douro River toward Vila Nova de Gaia, where many of Portugal’s famous Port wine cellars are located. Watching the sunset with a Porto Tonico in hand is one of those simple travel moments you’ll remember long after the trip ends.
If you’d like to learn more about Port wine while you’re here, I highly recommend booking one of these Port wine tours and tastings in Porto. Most include visits to historic wine lodges, tastings of several styles of Port, and plenty of insight into how this iconic wine is produced.
Turn Your Porto Tonico Into a Memorable Porto Experience
A Porto Tonico is delicious on its own, but it becomes even better when it’s part of a memorable afternoon or evening in the city. Fortunately, Porto offers several experiences where you can sip one while discovering the city’s food, wine, and culture.
Start at the Market
Mercado do Bolhão is one of the first stops in my 3 Days in Porto itinerary, making it the perfect place to enjoy your first Porto Tonico while exploring the city’s historic centre. There wasn’t anything special about the drink itself, rather the experince that comes with it.
Grab a glass from one of the market vendors and wander through the stalls filled with fresh seafood, cured meats, cheeses, pastries, and local produce before continuing your day.

If you’re looking for something more immersive, consider booking a Porto Market Tour & Cooking Class. These experiences combine a guided visit through one of Porto’s traditional markets with a hands-on cooking class where you’ll prepare authentic Portuguese dishes using the ingredients you’ve just selected. It’s one of the best ways to understand Portuguese cuisine beyond simply eating it. Many market-to-table classes begin with a guided market visit before finishing with a shared meal and Portuguese wine. (viator.com)
Sip a Porto Tonico on the Douro River
If I could only recommend one Porto experience, this might be it.
The Sunset Porto Boat Tour with Port Tónico combines one of the city’s signature drinks with one of its most beautiful settings. As the sun begins to set over the Douro River, you’ll cruise past Porto’s colourful Ribeira district and the famous Port wine lodges while enjoying a refreshing Porto Tonico.
It’s a fantastic alternative to simply sitting at a riverside bar and offers some of the best photo opportunities in the city.
Experience Porto’s Nightlife
If your evening is just getting started after your Porto Tonico, continue the fun on this Porto Pub Crawl.
It’s a great way to experience Porto’s nightlife, meet fellow travellers, and discover bars you might never have found on your own. While the Porto Tonico is the perfect aperitif, the pub crawl introduces you to everything from Portuguese beer to creative cocktails and lively late-night venues.
Whether you prefer a relaxing market visit, a sunset cruise on the Douro, or a night out exploring Porto’s bar scene, each experience offers a different way to appreciate the city’s incredible food and drink culture.
Porto Tonico Recipe: How to Make One at Home
The best souvenirs aren’t always the ones you pack in your suitcase. Sometimes they’re the experiences you recreate after you get home.

A few weeks after returning from Porto, I decided to recreate one of my favourite evenings from the trip. I made homemade bifanas, picked up a few bottles of Portuguese beer, mixed Porto Tonicos, and turned an ordinary Friday into a Porto-themed dinner.
It wasn’t quite the Douro River at sunset, but it came surprisingly close.
If you’d like to do the same, here’s the classic Porto Tonico recipe.
Ingredients
- 60 ml (2 oz) dry white Port
- 120 ml (4 oz) premium tonic water
- Plenty of ice
- Slice of lemon or orange
- Optional sprig of fresh rosemary or mint
Instructions
- Fill a large wine glass with ice.
- Pour in the white Port.
- Top with chilled tonic water.
- Gently stir.
- Garnish with citrus and, if desired, rosemary or mint. I like grapefruit and rosemary.
That’s it.
The simplicity is exactly what makes this port wine cocktail so good.
If you’re planning a full Portuguese-themed dinner, pair it with homemade bifanas from my Porto Sandwiches guide and an ice-cold Super Bock. Together they recreate one of my favourite evenings from Porto remarkably well.
What Port Should You Use?
Not all Port wines work equally well in a Porto Tonico.
For the best results, choose a dry white Port or extra dry white Port. These styles balance beautifully with tonic water, creating a refreshing port cocktail that isn’t overly sweet.
Some excellent options include:
- Taylor’s Chip Dry White Port
- Graham’s Blend No. 5 White Port
- Churchill’s Dry White Port
- Croft White Port
Each brings slightly different citrus, floral, and stone fruit notes, making it fun to experiment until you find your favourite.
If you’re visiting Porto, consider buying a bottle directly from one of the historic Port wine lodges. Not only will you often find bottles unavailable back home, but you’ll also have the perfect souvenir to recreate your own Porto Tonico recipe long after your trip.
What Food Pairs Well With a Porto Tonico?
One of the reasons I enjoyed Porto Tonicos so much is how food-friendly they are.
Their crisp, citrus-forward profile pairs beautifully with many of Portugal’s most famous dishes.
Some excellent pairings include:
- Fresh seafood
- Salt cod (bacalhau)
- Grilled sardines
- Petiscos (Portuguese tapas)
- Charcuterie and local cheeses
- Olives and roasted almonds
It’s also surprisingly good alongside Portugal’s famous sandwiches.
A refreshing Porto Tonico cuts through the richness of a francesinha, complements a juicy bifana, and even works well with a Portuguese hot dog. If you’re wondering where to find them, don’t miss my guide to Porto Sandwiches: 7 Must-Try Portuguese Sandwiches & Where to Eat Them.
Back home, I recreated the experience by making homemade bifanas, mixing Porto Tonicos, and serving them alongside a cold Super Bock. It made for a surprisingly authentic Porto-themed evening and reminded me just how much I loved the city’s food and drink culture.
If you’re planning a visit, I’d also recommend booking a Porto food and wine experience. They’re a fantastic way to sample local dishes, learn about Portuguese wine, and discover places you might otherwise walk right past.
Final Thoughts on Porto’s Signature Port Cocktail

Simple, refreshing, and unmistakably Portuguese, it offers a lighter way to experience the country’s most famous wine while embracing the relaxed pace of life that makes Porto so enjoyable.
Whether you’re enjoying one while wandering Mercado do Bolhão, watching the sunset along the Ribeira, or recreating the experience at home with homemade bifanas and a bottle of Super Bock, this is a drink worth adding to your travel traditions.
