Breathless Cancun Soul Resort Review: Is This the Best Cancun Adults Only Hotel?

Looking for a Breathless Cancun Soul resort review from someone who actually stayed here? I was too.

Cancun has no shortage of all-inclusive resorts, but choosing between them can quickly become overwhelming. Adults only or family friendly? Party resort or relaxing retreat? Is upgrading your room actually worth it? And, perhaps most importantly, is the food any good when you’re essentially committing to eating at the same property for several days?

This was my first stay at a Cancun adults only hotel, and I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting myself into.

The advertising for the Breathless Cancun Soul Resort certainly leans into the sexy side of travel. Attractive people in swimwear, cocktails flowing, DJs spinning, and an overall vibe that suggests everyone is having considerably more fun than you are at home.

Do I fit into the sexy traveller demographic? Debatable. Was I willing to investigate? Absolutely.

After staying at the Breathless Cancun Soul, I can say the marketing isn’t entirely exaggerated. This is a fun, energetic resort where drinking, socializing, entertainment and a little sexiness are deliberately woven into the experience. It isn’t some wild adults-only free-for-all, though. For the most part, it felt like a stylish modern resort that simply wasn’t afraid to turn up the music and have some fun.

I’ve stayed in hotels and resorts all over the world, from my Staybridge Suites Bangkok Thonglor stay to the very different experience of staying at the Palm River Hotel at Victoria Falls. More importantly for this review, I also stayed at the nearby Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort, giving me a useful local comparison between a family-friendly Cancun all-inclusive and Breathless.

That made me especially curious to see what an adults-only Cancun all-inclusive would do differently—and whether ditching the kids would actually make for a better resort experience.

Breathless Cancun Soul Resort at a Glance

Breathless Soul Cancun is an adults-only, all-inclusive beachfront resort in Cancun’s Hotel Zone. The property has 429 suites spread between its connected Skyline and Xcelerate towers.

Rooms range from lagoon-view junior suites to oceanfront accommodations and upgraded Xhale Club suites. The resort’s all-inclusive concept includes dining, cocktails, a replenished minibar, Wi-Fi, pool and beach service, daytime activities and nighttime entertainment.

That last part is important.

If your idea of a perfect vacation is finding a quiet pool chair and hearing nothing but waves for five days, there are probably better choices. Breathless puts a lot of effort into keeping guests entertained.

Breathless Cancun Location: Where Is the Resort?

The Breathless Cancun location is one of its strengths. The resort sits on Boulevard Kukulcan in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, squeezed between the Caribbean Sea and Nichupté Lagoon.

According to the resort, it’s approximately 25 minutes from Cancun International Airport and about two miles from the livelier section of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. That gives you fairly easy airport access without putting you directly in the middle of Cancun’s busiest nightlife.

On this Cancun trip, I flew business class on Air Canada’s Boeing 737 MAX 8, which made for a comfortable start to the vacation. The location also makes Breathless a good base if you don’t intend to spend your entire vacation beside the pool. You can head out for a Cancun street food tour, book a Cancun reef snorkeling excursion, or spend a day sailing on an Isla Mujeres catamaran.

I love Mexico well beyond its resorts. I’ve previously spent a 24-hour layover exploring Mexico City, experienced Lucha Libre in Mexico City and eaten my way through a Mazatlan street taco and mezcal food tour. My advice is to enjoy the all-inclusive experience, but don’t let the unlimited cocktails keep you from seeing at least a little more of Mexico.

Breathless Soul Cancun Rooms: Modern, Stylish and a Little Sexy

The Breathless Soul Cancun rooms were one of the strongest parts of my stay.

My room felt new, modern and thoughtfully designed. One of my favourite features was the bathroom, particularly the dual rain showers. If you’re travelling as a couple, I suspect you’ll understand why an adults-only resort decided two showers were better than one.

Then there was the lighting. Instead of simply giving you on and off, the room included different mood settings, including “Wow” and heart-themed lighting. Subtle, Breathless is not.

It was fun rather than tacky, and those little touches helped differentiate the room from the many generic upscale hotel rooms I’ve stayed in over the years. Officially, the standard rooms at Breathless Cancun Soul are still generous. Depending on category, junior suites are roughly 475 to 514 square feet, with private balconies, minibars, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speakers and Nespresso machines.

My “Ocean View” Wasn’t Quite What I Expected

Here’s where I would pay close attention when booking Breathless Soul Cancun rooms.

I had booked an ocean-view room, and while I could technically see the ocean, the view was primarily off to the side. I spent considerably more time looking at a small park and parking area than staring dramatically across the Caribbean.

When I asked the front desk about it, I was told I would need to pay to upgrade to a higher ocean-facing room category.

I didn’t bother. The room itself was excellent, and I wasn’t planning on spending enough time on the balcony to justify paying more.

Still, if waking up to an unobstructed Caribbean view is important to you, don’t assume every room with “ocean” in the description delivers the same view. Look carefully at whether you’re booking partial ocean view, ocean view or oceanfront.

That’s something I’ve learned from reviewing very different waterfront properties, including the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet and the Ashore Hotel on the Oregon Coast: the exact room category matters when the view is part of what you’re paying for.

Breathless Soul Cancun Map: Understanding Xhale Club

Looking at a Breathless Soul Cancun map before booking is worthwhile because your room category and tower can affect your experience.

The resort is divided between connected towers, and guests upgrading to Xhale Club receive additional perks, including access to the Xhale Club Lounge and an exclusive rooftop pool and bar.

I didn’t have Xhale access. Did that stop me from checking them out? Not exactly.

I managed to wander into both without any hassle during my stay, and I can confirm they’re genuinely nice additions. The rooftop pool was particularly impressive and had excellent views.

I ended up spending a little too much time enjoying myself up there. The pool closed earlier than I expected, which was disappointing at the time but, considering how enthusiastically I had been sampling the all-inclusive beverages, was probably in my best interest.

Would I pay considerably more solely for Xhale access? That depends on the rate difference. If you want a more exclusive rooftop setting and premium experience, it has value. If you’re primarily coming for the main pool, entertainment and restaurants, I wouldn’t consider it essential.

Cancun Adults Only Resort Amenities and Pools

The centre of the action is the pool. Breathless has three pool experiences across the property, including rooftop infinity pools, and the main entertainment pool is where I spent most of my time.

There’s a great shallow section around the edges where you can sit in the water with a drink without fully committing to swimming. There’s also an island feature near the swim-up bar that became a pretty convenient place to post up.

The resort also has beach access, a full fitness centre and a two-story spa.

The gym impressed me. It was properly equipped rather than being the sad hotel “fitness centre” consisting of two treadmills and a collection of dumbbells nobody has touched since 2008.

Even the elevators had personality, with funky lighting carrying the hotel’s energetic design into areas most properties completely ignore.

If your priority in choosing a Cancun adult only resort is having enough happening that you don’t get bored, Breathless does very well.

Ready to Book Breathless Cancun Soul?

Entertainment at Breathless Cancun Soul

Entertainment is where this Cancun adults only resort separates itself from a more traditional all-inclusive.

The staff constantly encouraged guests to participate without making it feel mandatory. During my stay, there was poolside bingo, music trivia, volleyball, salsa dancing, water aerobics, yoga and kayaking.

I got surprisingly invested in music trivia and bingo. I was somewhat less invested in water aerobics, although watching other people enthusiastically participate while I enjoyed a drink seemed like an equally valid resort activity.

The entertainment became more elaborate after dark.

Performers would move through the lobby and bars wearing revealing, illuminated costumes, adding to that deliberately sexy Breathless atmosphere. It wasn’t outrageous or uncomfortable. It was theatrical and playful.

The standout was a circus-style performance one evening.

It was legitimately impressive and much more polished than I expected from resort entertainment. Having stayed at another Cancun all-inclusive earlier in the trip, the production here felt noticeably more adult and elevated.

This is ultimately what I think Breathless gets right. It doesn’t simply remove children and call itself a Cancun Mexico adults only resort. It actually changes the programming to suit an adult audience.

Breathless Cancun Soul Restaurants: What I Ate

The Breathless Cancun Soul restaurants were another pleasant surprise.

There are numerous dining concepts, including Mexican, Italian, French, seafood, Pan-Asian and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean options, plus casual poolside food and the Spoon international buffet.

One thing to understand is that not every venue necessarily operates every evening. During my stay, some dining spaces appeared to rotate concepts depending on the night, so check the daily schedule rather than assuming every restaurant will be available whenever you want it.

Spoon Buffet

I primarily stuck with Spoon for breakfast and lunch, and I have zero regrets about that decision.

The breakfast spread was excellent. The tortilla and taco stations were obvious favourites because, come on, you’re in Mexico. Fresh tortillas and tacos should be consumed whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I also found myself attacking the smoked salmon and pancakes, particularly because there were flavoured butter and flavoured honey stations.

Mexican coffee was another highlight. Then there were the build-your-own Bloody Mary and mimosa stations, which are exactly the sort of things you hope to discover at an adults-only all-inclusive breakfast.

Poolside BBQ

Don’t overlook the casual food around the pool. One of my favourite things I ate during the entire stay was a smoked BBQ chicken thigh served near the pool. Add some mayo and chilli oil, and I was extremely happy.

Sometimes the best all-inclusive meal isn’t the one served on white tablecloths.

Silk City

I stopped by the Pan-Asian restaurant primarily for its elevated views and cocktails.

I was already ridiculously full, so I didn’t eat enough to give the menu a fair review. What I saw coming out of the kitchen looked good, though, and the setting alone made it worthwhile for a drink.

Spumante Italian Restaurant

On my final night, I finally gave my taco consumption a break and headed for Italian.

That turned out to be a good decision. The beef carpaccio was excellent, and I followed that with a very enjoyable pasta dish. After several days of Mexican flavours, it was a nice change of pace and a meal I’d happily repeat.

The Nook Café and Gelato

The lobby café became one of my most frequently visited stops. Baristas serve coffees and specialty drinks alongside snacks and gelato, and my personal favourite became the pistachio affogato. I returned for it multiple times. No regrets.

Food is one of the reasons I travel, whether that’s eating my way through Mexico or seeking out local experiences like I did on my Comuna 13 tour in Medellin and while exploring the city on a Medellin free walking tour. Although an all-inclusive buffet isn’t the same as exploring local neighbourhood restaurants, I thought Breathless did a good job offering enough variety to keep meals interesting.

Is This Cancun All Adults All Inclusive Worth It?

My first Cancun all adults all inclusive experience taught me that adults-only isn’t simply about the absence of children.

The atmosphere changes.

Breakfast can have a Bloody Mary station. Pool entertainment can be a little more suggestive. Performers can wear costumes that would probably raise some eyebrows at the kids’ club. Music can run louder, cocktails can flow more freely and nobody needs to schedule the evening show around bedtime.

That doesn’t mean Breathless is one nonstop nightclub. There were plenty of opportunities to sit by the pool, go to the beach, work out or simply relax in the room. You can choose how involved you want to be.

That’s why I think it works particularly well for couples and groups of friends who want a social vacation without committing to full-on Cancun clubbing every night.

The Biggest Negative: The Sales Pitch

My biggest complaint had nothing to do with my room, food or pool. It happened almost immediately after check-in, when a very friendly staff member began explaining the property and showing us maps. I mentioned that I was well travelled and already familiar with the area, but the explanation continued and eventually the conversation started to shift.

Would I like to join him for a free breakfast? Hold on, I’m at an all-inclusive resort. Breakfast is already free.

It quickly became apparent that this wasn’t really about breakfast. It was an invitation to sit through a vacation-club-style sales presentation. I eventually cut the conversation off and said I wasn’t interested in being pitched and simply wanted to get to my room. The temperature of the conversation changed almost instantly.

Instead of giving us the promised introduction to the property and its amenities, we were basically pointed in the direction of our room and sent on our way. That left a bad first impression, especially since the whole interaction had initially been presented as a welcome and introduction to the resort.

Over the next few days, I saw other guests going through the same “breakfast” presentation at the buffet, filling out surveys and sitting through the sales pitch. Unless you’re genuinely interested in joining the program, I’d skip it and spend that time enjoying the breakfast you already paid for.

We were offered roughly $200 in resort credits, but the credits came with enough restrictions that they weren’t nearly as valuable as $200 cash. When you can only apply small portions toward already expensive extras such as spa treatments, the headline number sounds considerably better than the actual benefit.

I would much rather the resort simply check guests in, explain the amenities and let them start their vacation. For a property that otherwise does such a good job of creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere, the sales pitch was an unnecessary sour note at the very beginning of the stay.

Things to Do Beyond Breathless Soul Cancun Resort

It would be very easy to stay inside the Breathless Soul Cancun resort for your entire trip, but Cancun makes a good base for exploring more of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Chichén Itzá is the obvious big-ticket day trip. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed archaeological site developed over nearly 1,000 years, with surviving landmarks including El Castillo, the Temple of the Warriors and El Caracol observatory. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988, making it an easy addition to a Cancun trip if you want to experience something beyond the beaches and resorts.

I’ve previously shared my tips for visiting Teotihuacan outside Mexico City, and the same general principle applies here: archaeological sites are much more rewarding when you understand what you’re looking at.

If ruins aren’t your thing, snorkeling, Isla Mujeres and food tours are much easier ways to break up several days at the resort.

Who Is This Cancun Adults Only Hotel Best For?

I would recommend this Cancun hotel adults only experience most strongly to couples, groups of friends and social travellers who want a modern all-inclusive without children and don’t mind some noise and energy around the pool.

It makes particular sense if:

• You want an adults-only environment without an overly romantic couples-only atmosphere.
• You enjoy pool bars, cocktails and organized activities.
• Food variety matters to you.
• You want modern rooms rather than traditional resort décor.
• You like DJs and entertainment.
• You want easy access to Cancun excursions and nightlife.

I would look elsewhere if you want complete peace and quiet, dislike organized entertainment, strongly object to vacation-club sales pitches or expect a sprawling tropical property with acres of gardens.

This is a relatively compact, vertical resort. That makes it easy to navigate but doesn’t provide the same feeling as a huge Riviera Maya complex.

Breathless Soul Cancun Review: Is It Worth It?

So, is Breathless Cancun Soul worth booking? For the right traveller, absolutely.

I went into this stay unsure about what my first adults-only resort experience would be like. The Breathless marketing had prepared me for something considerably more risqué than the resorts I normally visit.

What I found was much more balanced. Yes, things can get a little sexy. Yes, there are dancers in revealing outfits. Yes, cocktails flow freely, the music gets loud and the resort definitely wants you to have a good time.

But underneath all of that is a genuinely comfortable hotel with excellent modern rooms, good food, impressive pools and staff putting considerable effort into keeping guests entertained.

For me, the rooms, breakfast, pool and evening entertainment were the highlights. The aggressive vacation-club introduction was easily the low point.

If your trip includes children, however, this obviously isn’t an option. For families, I found the Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort to offer better overall value during my Cancun travels, with extensive pools, family activities, kids’ facilities and plenty of dining options.

My hotel preferences change considerably depending on the destination. Sometimes I want a stylish urban property like the Landmark Hotel Medellin, sometimes location wins like at the Hesperia Hotel Bilbao near the Guggenheim, and sometimes I want a relaxed coastal stay like the Adrift Hotel in Long Beach, Washington.

In Cancun, Breathless fills a very specific niche: upscale all-inclusive comfort for adults who still want to have some fun.
