From the street, you would never guess what lies behind the front door.

The entrance is understated, almost anonymous, and if you weren’t paying attention, you could easily walk right past it.
Then you step inside.
The property seems to unfold one courtyard at a time, almost like opening the wardrobe into Narnia. Suddenly you’re surrounded by lush gardens, restored stone buildings, quiet seating areas, colourful artwork, and an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy streets outside.
It immediately became one of my favourite first impressions of any hotel I’ve stayed at.
Porto can be wonderfully energetic, especially around Ribeira, São Bento Station, and Livraria Lello. After spending hours wandering the city’s steep cobblestone streets, having somewhere so peaceful to return each afternoon felt like a luxury in itself.
I also loved the artistic personality throughout the property.
Rather than generic hotel décor, Canto de Luz showcases contemporary artwork, warm wood finishes, exposed stone walls, and inviting common spaces that feel genuinely lived in.

Why I Chose Canto de Luz
On previous visits to Porto, I’ve stayed elsewhere, including my excellent experience at 7G Roaster Apartments.

After spending several days exploring the city again, I genuinely think Rua do Almada is one of the smartest choices.

I’m not usually someone who gets excited about hotel breakfasts.
Too often they’re predictable buffets with lukewarm eggs, dry pastries, and coffee that’s more about caffeine than enjoyment. Canto de Luz was the complete opposite.
Breakfast quickly became one of the highlights of each morning.
Rather than queueing at a buffet, guests order from an à la carte menu featuring a mix of traditional Portuguese dishes alongside lighter, healthier options. Everything is prepared fresh to order, making breakfast feel less like a hotel routine and more like starting the day at one of Porto’s best brunch cafés.
The coffee was excellent every morning—a non-negotiable for me—and the menu offered everything from fresh juices and smoothies to artisan breads, local cheeses, cured meats, eggs cooked to order, fruit, yogurt, and a rotating selection of pastries.

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Canto de Luz is its location. Throughout my stay, I rarely needed public transport because almost everything I wanted to see was within an easy walk. Whether I was heading out for breakfast, sightseeing, or dinner by the river, Porto’s top attractions always felt close at hand.
Mercado do Bolhão
Just a few minutes from the hotel, the beautifully restored Mercado do Bolhão remains Porto’s culinary heart.
